That question should now be asked of one of Washington's least scrutinized congressional bodies: the U.S. Helsinki Commission. Congress established the U.S. Helsinki Commission as the United States' oversight body for monitoring implementation of the Helsinki Final Act. Congress created the U.S. Helsinki Commission to monitor compliance with the Helsinki Final Act during the Cold War — not to advance foreign policy agendas of its own choosing. The U.S. Helsinki Commission fulfilled the mission Congress assigned it nearly fifty years ago. The time has come for Congress and the administration to sunset the U.S. Helsinki Commission for the benefit of the American taxpayer.
