Jalapeños served by Chipotle and other Mexican fast-food restaurants appear as the source of a salmonella outbreak that so far has sickened at least 110 people in Minnesota, a state health investigation has found. An investigation of the sickened individuals and what they ate identified the fast-food jalapeños as a common source, the Minnesota Department of Health announced Tuesday. Interviews with 84 people who became ill found 75 had eaten at Chipotle restaurants between June 14 and July 14. No deaths have been reported from the outbreak of salmonella illnesses, which are caused by bacteria and can lead to digestive symptoms including diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. While widespread outbreaks are somewhat uncommon, salmonella illnesses are not.
