Every era seems to have its own band who are synonymous with New York City and who define the New York sound. In the 1960s, it was The Velvet Underground, in 2001, it was The Strokes, and right now, for better or worse, it’s Geese (who just sound like The Strokes anyway, so maybe it’s still The Strokes?). Really, though, none of the groups that defined the club or helped cement its place in history should have been anywhere near the CBGBs stage in the first place. But you couldn’t really call the music that Television was making just punk rock, could you? It seems like every ten years or so, a whole new batch of fans are introduced to Television because we’re so commonly cited as an influence.
