From New Hope to Nashville: Ween Expands A Classic with ’12 Golden Country Greats’ Deluxe (ALBUM REVIEW)
['Shawn Donohue']
Glide Magazine
To celebrate 30 years since its 1996 debut, Ween has spruced up their 12 Golden Country Greats album with a remastering while also adding over 20 unreleased demos and Nashville outtakes.
This Deluxe Edition is a treasure trove for Ween fans, as well as an earnest, slightly off-kilter country album with moments of beauty alongside some crass lyrics.
The Ween boys smartly let the top-notch session players cover all the instruments (outside of a few guitars) and focused on singing/songwriting.
The programmed drum beat of “Piss Up A Rope”, the underwater vocals of “Maybelle” and the dance beat of “Powder Blue” will sound far from country, but very natural to Ween fans.
A feast for Ween fans and beyond 12 Golden Country Greats 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition returns to a very specific place and time in the band’s career, opening the songwriting and recording process to the public.
