North Las Vegas charter school FuturEdge Charter Academy will be renamed Academy of Math and Science North Vegas after the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority voted unanimously to terminate its contract over serious financial and governance problems, the authority announced Friday. The K-8 school carries more than $14 million in debt, including roughly $13.3 million in outstanding bonds, according to Rosemawr Management, the school's bondholder. Authority staff cited widespread governance failures at FuturEdge, including a school board that lacked a quorum and had not met legal oversight requirements since at least February. Guthrie testified that disputed payments tied to the management arrangement, including a contested information technology contract, disrupted students' access to online instructional materials. Academies of Math and Science leaders said their goal is to turn the campus into a five-star school.
