According to a criminal complaint, Champlin police responded to the report of illegal fireworks being launched in Maciej’s driveway and told him to stop. Maciej asked if his neighbor, Hoffman, had reported the fireworks but the officer did not answer. A security camera at the Hoffman residence captured Maciej uttering the names of John Hoffman and his daughter, Hope, in between booms. The Hoffmans reported that the sounds of explosions dredged up memories of the assassination attempt they survived last summer. According to the complaint, Yvette Hoffman said Maciej’s statements mentioning her family made her feel “terrorized and … fearful of going outside.”
