The high court has granted an appeal, throwing out the reduced sentence for the killer of a mother stabbed to death in Queensland. However, on Wednesday a high court appeal was approved, overturning the reduced sentence. The High Court justices found the original sentencing judge was correct to not recognise “special circumstances” for the teen when handing him a minimum nine years and nine months. Justice Tom Sullivan, who handed down the original sentence on the teen killer, who cannot be named due to his age at the time of the offence, cited the teen’s “particularly heinous” conduct. With the original sentence to be restored the teenage offender will now spend an extra 17 months in custody.
