Clinical trials of candidate therapies for neurologic and psychiatric conditions often fail because current measurement tools are unable to detect therapeutic efficacy, according to authors of a new study. Yet, despite such efforts, the sector still struggles to identify the right outcome assessment tools. “One major challenge in neuroscience clinical trials is the limited availability of reliable, sensitive, and fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessment tools,” they wrote. “Some well-established instruments, commonly regarded as gold standards in clinical trials, may not fully meet the mentioned FFP [fit-for-purpose] criteria. Another challenge, the authors noted, is that some of the legacy outcome measurement tools lack the sensitivity to capture change in specific disease dimensions or concepts.
