Opensignal’s data indicates that one in five rural households that switched broadband providers in the past year chose Starlink. In the United States, policymakers are already shifting away from fibre-first subsidy models toward “technology-neutral” approaches that allow satellite providers to compete for public funding. Just as hyperscalers have come to dominate cloud and data ecosystems, satellite operators are now positioning themselves as gatekeepers of global connectivity. For Australia, the key question is no longer whether satellite broadband has a role to play.
