August 3, 2026 By J. N. WestonBetty, a Houston-based entrepreneur, built her business selling home-cooked soul food, drawing on family traditions and community support, according to an Aug. 3 article. Initially selling food on the streets, at local events, and outside shops, Betty gained recognition in her neighborhood for dishes such as chicken wings, pork chops, and oxtails. In 2025 she opened her first restaurant storefront. Betty used loans from Grameen America to purchase supplies and kitchen appliances; she plans further improvements with additional funding. Today, Betty operates both a restaurant storefront and a food truck while working toward opening another location as she continues saving money and creating jobs locally.
