Good Jobs Need Decent Work (and Decent Multilateralism)The crisis of multilateralism, marked by slashed budgets and weakened political will, has been lamented by representatives, friends and critics of the world’s major institutions for years. Nevertheless, the normative core of SDG 8, which defines decent work as “productive work for women and men in conditions of freedom, equity security, and human dignity” is valuable and clarifies that, more than just about earnings, decent work is also about rights and dignity. The response to a framework that is falling short should not be to introduce something new, especially when differences between a good job and decent work are conceptual and ideological. What can the World Bank’s good jobs agenda learn from the UN’s decent work agenda? It looks like the rights-based dimensions of decent work could be the first on the chopping block.
