Sen. Susan Collins announced on Tuesday that she does not intend to vote for President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Justice. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12-10 along party lines in support of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to formally take the position on Tuesday, clearing the way for a Senate vote, potentially later this week. “While I believe Mr. Blanche is a capable lawyer, the Department of Justice has become increasingly political,” Collins said in a statement on Tuesday. The Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote followed a deal struck late Sunday between Blanche and Republican Sens. Blanche, Trump’s former personal attorney, took over as acting attorney general following Pam Bondi’s departure in April.
