Millions of Shiite Muslims gathered Tuesday in Iraq’s holy city of Karbala for the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage as regional tensions fueled concerns about renewed fighting between the United States and Iran, according to the Associated Press (AP). Millions of Iraqi worshippers also traveled to Karbala for one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. Some worshippers reported fewer visitors from Arab, European, and other countries, linking the decline to the war and wider regional instability. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi joined the pilgrimage after arriving in Najaf on Monday and continuing to Karbala. The foreign minister’s visit highlighted Iraq’s delicate position between Washington and Tehran as Baghdad seeks to avoid deeper involvement in the conflict.
