Currently, economy travellers get two items: one for the overhead bin and a smaller one for under the seat. That’s being replaced with a single carry-on bag. Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully framed the move as a fix for boarding delays rather than a pure revenue play, saying the airline wanted travellers focused on one thing: bag size. “Passengers won’t enjoy paying the extra fee, but Jetstar’s move does have operational benefits,” she said. “Removing bag weigh-ins and reducing competition for overhead locker space should improve the boarding process and lead to better on-time performance across the Jetstar network.”
