Pauline Hanson’s banning of pesky, questioning journalists from press events shows One Nation is at a pivot point. Should it carry on as a movement of pure protest, leaning into emotional touchstones to mobilise its base? Or will One Nation feel the temptation of power to become something more ordinary: just another political party of government with all the compromises and coalition-building that involves? The ABC, Nine mastheads, Guardian Australia and, even, shockingly, Crikey journalists have got themselves into trouble with Hanson because they insist on applying the usual standards of questioning and accountability to One Nation.
