According to reports, the US military used a substantial number of its precision-guided missiles during the conflict with Iran, which lasted for several months. The reported shortage mainly concerns the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and the newer Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). It has also been supplied to Ukraine, where it has been used to strike military targets. If the United States needs to launch another large-scale military campaign before replenishing its missile inventory, military planners may have to rely more heavily on fighter aircraft and strategic bombers. The reported decline in the US missile inventory comes at a time of continuing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Russia and China.
