Several Long Island school districts have cash reserves higher than the allowable state limit capped at 4% of their budgets, a common trend in Island districts.
Unrestricted reserves may be used at a school district’s discretion and must be maintained within the state cap of 4%.
However, the Herricks School District is slightly above that figure at 5.56%.
The district, which had 4,329 students enrolled during the 2024-25 school year and 4,285 students during the 2025-26 school year, had a total proposed budget of $144,543,210 during the 2025-26 school year.
The district had $8,036,602 in unrestricted reserves, according to the 5.56% figure and had a proposed tax levy of 2% for the 2025-26 school year.
