House Debates Tougher Tobacco ControlsThe Government of Belize is moving to tighten restrictions on tobacco use with the introduction of the Tobacco Control Bill.
This legislation is aimed at reducing smoking and protecting the public from exposure to tobacco smoke.
The proposed law would prohibit smoking in several outdoor public areas, including parks, playgrounds, stadiums, public waiting areas and within specified distances of building entrances, windows and outdoor dining spaces.
Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton said the Opposition supports measures to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.
The bill also introduces mandatory age verification for the purchase of tobacco products as part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen tobacco control and improve public health.
