Canadian Denis Shapovalov suffered a walkover upset in the first round of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers on Tuesday.
Down 3-0 in the third set, Shapovalov retired early with an apparent groin injury he sustained earlier in the match.
He broke American Zachary Svajda early in the opening set and held from then on, getting out to an early lead.
However, an unforced error and a pair of double faults led to Svajda’s second break of the second set, as he took the frame 6-4.
Shapovalov also lost in the first around of the National Bank Open in 2025.
