Pakistan no longer faces an electricity generation shortage, but now its solar owners must help make better use of surplus solar power at night, Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said on Tuesday. Speaking at the Solar Storage Flexibility 2026 Conference in Islamabad, Leghari said the government is now focused on storing excess daytime solar power to meet rising demand during the evening. He said Pakistan’s main challenge is ensuring that renewable energy can be used when it is needed most. He said battery energy storage systems are not only essential for balancing the grid but also for protecting the country’s economy from external energy shocks. According to the minister, energy storage will make that target practical by allowing grid operators to integrate larger volumes of renewable power without wasting excess solar generation.
