Prominent legal figure removed as human rights commissioner after providing reference for child sex offender

David Lavery is Chief Executive of the Law Society of Northern IrelandSecretary of State Chris Bryant has removed prominent legal figure David Lavery from the Human Rights Commission after he gave a reference to a convicted child sex offender.
Mr Lavery, who is the chief executive of the Law Society, also served as a commissioner with the Human Rights Commission.
The Human Rights Commission launched an investigation under its code of governance into Mr Lavery.
In a statement to The Irish News on Tuesday, the commission confirmed that Mr Bryant has now removed Mr Lavery from his commission post.
“The protection of victims of sexual violence and abuse is of the utmost importance to the Human Rights Commission,” a spokeswoman said.
