Over the longer term, the class divide was probably the more damaging, since the strike and the fear surrounding it poisoned political relations for decades. These older divisions still echo in public memory, whereas the urban-rural divide appears to have become more salient more recently. Linguistic conflict was cited by 24% of respondents in French-speaking Switzerland and 26% in the Italian-speaking region, compared with just 9% in German-speaking Switzerland. Among supporters of the Socialist Party, 41% regarded class conflict as Switzerland’s greatest historical threat. These groups were instead most likely to emphasise the urban-rural divide, cited by 29%, 32% and 30% respectively.
