I was probably the youngest person in the crowd at Theatre Beanfield on July 27th, where Cat Power revisited her 2006 album: The Greatest. The Greatest stands out, at the time of its release and still 20 years later, because of Cat Power’s somewhat surprising but very natural-feeling turn to soul. Born in 2005, with an alternative-music-loving, former-Montréal-transplant father, I heard The Greatest a lot growing up. My favourite moment in this encore-of-sorts was her introduction to “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” where she shared that her late grandmother used to play that song on the piano and would say it “goes out to all the bad bitches… bad, bad, bad”. By the end of her concert, it felt like Cat Power had transformed Theatre Beanfield into a place of worship.
