Sudan imported more than $274 million worth of medicines during the first half of 2026 as authorities work to improve drug availability amid a worsening healthcare crisis caused by the ongoing conflict.
The National Fund for Medical Supplies (NFMS) said the country’s medicine availability has increased to more than 70 per cent, with supplies secured for 40 essential medical items for three months.
The fund purchased pharmaceuticals worth 155 billion Sudanese pounds, alongside 11 billion Sudanese pounds in medical equipment, according to reports presented at a health ministry review meeting.
Authorities said efforts are underway to revive domestic manufacturing, with 13 pharmaceutical factories resuming operations and 11 new medical products registered.
However, challenges including unreliable electricity and transport difficulties continue to affect the distribution of medical supplies across the country.
