Mulch is being dropped from helicopters on the slopes of the Steamboat Ski Resort, kicking up dust that resembles smoke. The resort is performing helicopter logging operations aiming to reduce wildfire risk in the resort’s permit area. “As part of helicopter logging operations at Steamboat Resort, mulch is being dropped from the helicopter this morning,” Steamboat Resort Communications Director Maren Franciosi said Tuesday. The downed trees from the wind event are being chipped into mulch, milled into lumber or portioned into firewood. Resort officials note that impacts may change day-to-day and encourage community members to stay updated via the Ikon app and Steamboat.com .
