While we all wonder if our salad will make us poop uncontrollably, a new biological foe has entered the chat. Health officials say that nearly half of all U.S. states—including Texas—have reported cases of Candida auris, a hard-to-treat “superbug” that usually infects sick people with underlying medical conditions. Texas has the most, in fact, at 700 cases so far. C. auris is a yeast that can cause life-threatening infections when it enters the body through things like catheters, feeding tubes, and breathing tubes, and can spread rapidly in healthcare settings, spreading the fungus to bedrails and doorknobs, where it can survive for long periods. It can’t be killed by most disinfectants and is resistant to antifungal medications.
