Gavi Welcomes Restoration of US Funding Amid Vaccine Policy Debate

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, has welcomed the release of $600 million in frozen US funding that had been delayed during a political dispute in Washington.
The restored funding covers fiscal years 2025–2026 and follows bipartisan efforts in the US Congress to release the funds.
According to Gavi, the investment will help maintain global immunization programmes and support the alliance’s broader vaccination goals for the 2026–2030 period.
The funding decision includes a requirement from the US government that Gavi work toward reducing reliance on vaccines containing thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used in some multi-dose vaccine formulations.
Gavi stated that efforts to move toward alternative vaccine options were already underway but had been slowed by financial limitations.
