Barclays is facing a legal battle over cash held in accounts belonging to a collapsed shadow bank. AlixPartners, the administrators, were appointed to oversee parts of MFS by some of the shadow bank's creditors just before it collapsed amid allegations of fraud earlier this year. It also lent money to the collapsed shadow bank, meaning it stands to lose out from the collapse. A number of administrators acting on behalf of different MFS creditors have claimed Barclays has refused to hand over cash held in bank accounts. MFS was a shadow bank, which meant it did not accept deposits and instead funded its loans by borrowing from banks and other lenders including Barclays, Santander, Wells Fargo and Jefferies.
