Trail of the Week: Notch Mountain
['Vail Valley Bike', 'Hike', 'Outdoor Adventures Magazine']
Vail Daily
Notch Mountain, which rises to 13,100 feet about a 45-minute drive from Minturn, is best known for its striking views of nearby Mount of the Holy Cross.
Their numbers prompted the construction of the Notch Mountain Shelter on the mountain’s saddle in 1933.
At the junction with the Notch Mountain Trail, take the right fork, ascending steadily above the tree line.
The trail ends at the Notch Mountain Shelter, an impressive stone building framing picturesque views of the Holy Cross.
Notch Mountain is in the Holy Cross Wilderness, so practice Leave No Trace principles and don’t camp or start fires above 11,000 feet and within 100 feet of water sources.
