Dal Lake gets floating art gallery with 40 painted shikaras
['Idrees Bukhtiyar']
Rising Kashmir
The initiatives aim to celebrate Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, craftsmanship and artistic traditions through public art.
As part of Aks-e-Kashmir, 40 iconic shikaras have been redesigned by contemporary artists Owais Ahmed, Sheehij Kaul, Zahra Javed and Shweta Sharma.
Each artwork reflects a different aspect of Kashmir’s culture and identity, using Asian Paints’ colours, wood finishes and fabrics to enhance the traditional wooden boats.
Designed by Srinagar-based architect and artist Zoya Kashmiri and painted by local artists, the 11,500-square-foot artwork draws inspiration from the university’s motto, "Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya" (From Darkness to Light), symbolising knowledge, imagination and Kashmir’s cultural legacy.
Created using Asian Paints Apex Ultima Protek, the mural is designed to withstand changing weather conditions.
