The Supreme Court’s latest directions on digital arrest scams are both timely and necessary. Digital arrest scams have emerged as one of the most chilling forms of cyber fraud. Citizens must be repeatedly told that no genuine police station, court or investigating agency will ask them to remain under “digital arrest” over a video call. The court’s call for technological measures and time-based restrictions on voice and video services also reflects the scale of the problem. They require institutional speed, public vigilance and a criminal justice response that leaves fraudsters with nowhere to hide.
