Wellington County OPP are recognizing a Good Samaritan who saved a driver from drowning in Guelph Lake over the Civic long weekend. Police say a vehicle flipped onto its roof within Guelph Lake Sunday night and the driver became trapped inside as it quickly filled with water. According to OPP, a courageous witness rushed to the driver’s aid by jumping into the lake, cutting their seatbelt, and freeing them from the submerged vehicle. OPP have charged a 54-year-old from Guelph with making an unsafe move under the Highway Traffic Act. On August 2, 2026, at approximately 10:00 PM, a vehicle flipped onto its roof within Guelph Lake and began rapidly filling with water while the driver remained trapped inside.
