And now, a new camino spanning six Italian regions has been created to help intrepid travellers experience all of this. The Il Cammino di Francesco network crosses some of Italy’s most beautiful regions, covering 1,546 km in total, and follows the very routes Saint Francis walked during his lifetime. This is where St Francis is said to have received the stigmata – bodily marks that resemble the wounds of the crucified Christ. The Way of St Francis is said to be one the hardest routes, as almost all of the stages contain many ups and downs.
