ROCHESTER — You might not believe it, but there was a time when state Sen. Carla Nelson of Rochester was a very shy person. Before she entered politics, Nelson knew little about how the machinery of government worked. After its passage, Nelson belonged to the first class of high school girls to benefit from the legislation. She went out for high school track and ended up “breaking” many track and field records because there were none. It allows Rochester students to earn both a high school diploma and college credential in practical nursing or an associate's degree in IT.
