The primary has become one of the clearest tests of whether Democratic voters favor a more progressive agenda or a centrist approach after President Donald Trump’s return to the White House in 2025.
The contest has also attracted more than $40 million in outside political spending, with groups supporting Stevens or opposing El-Sayed.
Republicans currently hold 53 of the Senate’s 100 seats, meaning Democrats need to flip four seats in November to regain a majority.
Michigan voters are also choosing party nominees for several congressional seats, while both parties are selecting gubernatorial nominees.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is considered the front-runner in the Democratic primary.
