Her 2020 debut album, “Lala Tamar,” was the first contemporary album recorded entirely in Haketia, helping revive interest in the language and its musical heritage. She accompanies herself on instruments including the guembri (also called a sintir), a three-string bass lute central to Gnawa music, and the qraqeb, traditional North African metal castanets. Tamar’s work combines traditional North African music with contemporary influences from Brazil, jazz, and world music. Joining Ms. Tamar on August 8 will be Yacouba Sissoko, a Malian-born master kora player, composer, and educator whose performances bridge the traditional music of West Africa with jazz, classical, pop, and world music. So the moment we come on stage, it’s actually a very small yet significant moment in our overall practice and time.
