Born on 2 August 1868 in Athens, Constantine was the eldest son of King George I and Queen Olga of Greece. He was inevitably christened "Constantine" (Greek: Κωνσταντῖνος, Kōnstantīnos) on 12 August, and his official style was the Diádochos (Διάδοχος, Crown Prince, literally: "Successor"). On the initiative of Prime Minister Venizelos, Constantine was also awarded the rank and baton of a Field Marshal.
