We remain a constitutional monarchy governed through representative rather than direct democracy. But one can reject separatism in Alberta without embracing the notion that democracy itself becomes dangerous whenever citizens reach the “wrong” conclusion. Fareed Zakaria pointed out nearly three decades ago that the catch-all term “democracy” mostly refers to only a specific type—liberal democracy. I want to nonetheless signal appreciation for the culture and tradition of Western Canadian direct democracy all this stems from. The United Farmers of Alberta and Social Credit governments in Alberta pursued initiatives of direct democracy, often in deliberate opposition to Ottawa.
