The Lake District National Park Authority has approved plans to transform redundant barns at Woodend Farm, near Thornthwaite, into two two-bedroom properties and one three-bedroom home. All three will be subject to local-occupancy restrictions, preventing them from being used as second homes or holiday lets. Woodend began as a late 18th or early 19th-century farm complex overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake, before its agricultural buildings were redeveloped during the early 20th century. A heritage statement submitted with the application says the complex was built by wealthy Bolton businessman Robert Jackson Holdsworth. It also highlights the size and quality of the internal timberwork, particularly the King Post and Queen Post roof trusses.
