The militias involved in the fighting are forces aligned with the Government of National Unity (GNU) — which administers western Libya under the leadership of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah — but are rivals of one another. As the conflict escalated, businesses and institutions urged their employees not to report to work because the fighting had spread across very large areas.
