Mr Lewis died on July 20, aged 90, just months after celebrating his milestone birthday surrounded by family and close friends. During his time at Westminster, Mr Lewis became known as a passionate and outspoken backbench MP who frequently championed causes he believed would benefit ordinary people. In 1995, Mr Lewis responded to Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe’s seemingly long answers to Employment Questions by telling her to ‘make it quick because her broomstick was being clamped’. Away from politics, Mr Lewis was a devoted family man and was married to Audrey Clarke from 1958 until her death in 2024. Mr Lewis spent his final years in Swinton and celebrated his 90th birthday quietly with loved ones in December.
