Deputy Michael Lowry says the Office of Public Works(OPW) will support an application from Tipperary county council for works on the river Suir in Thurles and Holycross. The TD hosted a visit by the Minister of State Kevin Moran to view the river which Deputy Lowry says has fallen into a state of neglect. The funding will be provided via the enhanced Minor Works Scheme which provides funding from €750,000 to €2 million and greater support for removing river blockages that contribute to flooding. It has also emerged that NoreVision, a community group funded by LEADER in Kilkenny is to move forward with establishing a River Suir Trust and a River Barrow Trust which will both be set up as Companies Limited by Guarantee. Angling Groups and Recreation Groups are also concerned – recently George McGrath from Cashel documented the pressures from pollution as he calls for urgent action before the River Suir reaches ecological collapse.
