Hunter08/04/26Iowa City officials are laying the groundwork for a new transit facility.
The Press-Citizen reports the city plans to relocate its transit system from the Riverside Drive location to the public works campus at the intersection of Gilbert Street and McCollister Boulevard.
The City says a steady increase in ridership since its fare-free program began in 2023 has resulted in plans to expand its transit fleet.
The proposed $19 million hub will support a full conversion to a low to no emission fleet.
Construction is in the preliminary stages, but $19 million in federal funding from the Federal Transit Administration is expected .
