Photo by Keita SaikiDavid Zwirner will present the first solo exhibition by Yoshitomo Nara at the gallery this autumn, marking the celebrated Japanese artist’s first major solo exhibition in New York for almost a decade. The exhibition follows David Zwirner’s announcement in late 2025 that it would represent Nara, a move FAD covered at the time. The exhibition traces that evolution by placing foundational works from the 1980s alongside paintings completed in 2026. Occupying the gallery’s 19th Street space will be thirteen monumental sculptures based on palm-sized clay models created by Nara in 2024. Beneath their deceptively simple appearance, Nara’s figures convey complex emotions ranging from vulnerability and loneliness to defiance and resilience, exploring themes of identity, isolation, memory and childhood.
