Across West Africa, queer feminist movements are navigating an increasingly difficult political landscape. Caroline Kouassiaman has spent much of the past decade working at the intersection of movement building and philanthropy. As Executive Director of ISDAO (Initiative Sankofa d’Afrique de l’Ouest), an activist-led fund supporting LGBTQI organisations across West Africa, she works closely with movements responding to these realities every day. In this conversation, she reflects on how anti-rights organising has evolved, why safety cannot be treated as an afterthought, and what global philanthropy still misunderstands about supporting movements in the region.
