Biovac expansion boosts Africa vaccine productionAfrica’s efforts to reduce its dependence on imported vaccines received a major boost after the African Development Bank Group approved a loan of up to $15 million for South Africa’s Biologicals and Vaccines Institute, known as Biovac, to expand vaccine manufacturing in Cape Town. The project is designed to strengthen the continent’s ability to produce critical vaccines locally and support the African Union’s target of manufacturing 60 per cent of Africa’s vaccines by 2040. Once completed in 2028, the facility is expected to become Africa’s first end to end manufacturer of oral cholera vaccines and South Africa’s first producer of inactivated polio vaccines.
