That work reflected an older tradition of international Black journalism. Lecturer in Black history at Goldsmiths, University of London, Kesewa John, highlighted the influence of Jamaican activist Marcus Garvey, who founded The Negro World in New York in 1918. By the late 20th century, diaspora journalism continued through publications including Drum in South Africa and Présence Africaine in France. Boima Tucker of Africa Is a Country said modern Black diaspora media must continue building international connections while providing deeper historical understanding. “The challenge for Black diaspora media is not simply to represent Black life,” Tucker said, “but to create spaces where people can collectively make sense of the world they inhabit, and imagine alternatives.”
