As it races to deliver 5G from orbit, SpaceX is planning for “thousands” of satellites in operation for Starlink Mobile by the end of 2028. Starlink Mobile currently spans about 650 satellites, enabling it to beam mobile data and text messaging to phones in cellular dead zones. That said, adoption of the upgraded Starlink Mobile will depend on consumers buying next-gen devices, SpaceX says.
