The Senate on Monday night advanced a stop-gap spending measure – known as a continuing resolution – to primarily keep the federal government funded at its current level through December with some exceptions. The upper chamber advanced the measure by voting in bipartisan support of a procedure called invoking cloture – which essentially ends all debate on the measure and limits further discussion so that it can get a final floor vote. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican; Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent; and Democrats Tim Kaine, of Virginia, and Elizabeth Warren. The Senate is expected to resume discussion on the resolution Tuesday, but a final vote has yet to be scheduled as senators prepare to leave town for August recess.
