Asean’s decision on July 21, 2026, to elevate Turkey from a sectoral dialogue partner to a full dialogue partner is more than a diplomatic promotion. Turkey becomes Asean’s 12th dialogue partner after nearly a decade of structured engagement. This matters because Asean’s strategic depth cannot be measured only by the number of summits it convenes. Economic relations remain modest compared with Asean’s trade with China, the United States, Japan or the European Union. As the 12th dialogue partner, Turkey gives Asean greater reach, more options and additional resilience.
